My Topic: Surrogate Motherhood

Below are guidelines on your JME (Jewish Medical Ethics) project. PROVIDE ALL THIS INFORMATION ON YOUR OWN HOMEPAGE OF THE CJI WIKI.

HOW?

GO TO 'NEW PAGE' ON THE TOP LEFT OF THE CJI WIKI. WRITE YOUR NAME AND YOUR DILEMMA IN THE 'CREATE NEW PAGE' BOX. CLICK 'CREATE.'

1. Choose a subject in Medical Ethics that appeals to you.
Some examples are Eugenics, IVF, Surrogate Motherhood, Abortion from Rape or other undesirable circumstances, Organ Donation, End of Life issues/Assisted Suicide/Pulling the Plug, Brain Death, or your own idea. See this site for ideas and articles: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/medtoc.html.

2. State the Jewish Medical Ethical dilemma and raise three relevant questions. For example, SURROGATE MOTHERHOOD: A woman has trouble getting pregnant and would like to use a surrogate mother. Is this acceptable according to Jewish law? If the sperm and the egg come from Jewish donors, but the surrogate mother is not-Jewish, is the child Jewish? What if the father is a Cohen? How does that affect the child's status?

3. State two halachot that are discussed in your ethical dilemma. For example, in the Surrogate Motherhood example, the halacha brings down that the surrogate mother must be single, otherwise carrying the child of another man would be considered adultery. Another Halachic problem is הוצאת זרע לבטלה based on the story of Er and Onan (Genesis 38) where God's displeasure with this practice is expressed. Often, halachic rulings permit the collection of semen for fertility purposes, but the method must be examined and a Rabbi with medical background must be consulted.

4. Insert a link of a Jewish article discussing your Ethical dilemma. Some experts in the field are Rabbi Dr. Moshe Tendler, Rav Moshe Feinstein zt"l, Dr. Avraham Steinberg, and RAFAEL organization in Israel. For example, for surrogate motherhood, consult the Nishmat site http://www.yoatzot.org/article.php?id=121. Other discussions can be found here: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/medtoc.html.
Israel has the leading medical and halachic centers for family and fertility issues. Check out this site, the Puah Institute, for information on halachic guidance for IVF and surrogate motherhood: http://www.puahonline.org/about-us.
5. State conflicting Rabbinic opinions, if that exists, and then state your OWN OPINION!

6. Add a photo (not-gory) of your dilemma!

7. Research Medical breakthroughs, dialogues, discussions or organizations in Israel that discuss your medical ethic. Post question and response to your wiki; Explain the purpose of this organization, dialogue, or research and how it affects Jews around the world.

I will be available during office hours on Google chat, Skype chat, or the wiki from 8-9pm Thurs eve for questions. Post any question on the CJI Discussion board.
